Our anniversary is Friday, so my husband’s taking a half day at work. But I’m taking off all of Thursday and Friday, so you better believe I’m getting in some quality gaming time. SO EXCITED!

Gone Home & Unravel

Played Uncharted 4 and needed something else to keep my attention until No Man’s Sky (which is so close now I can taste it!!!!). So I turned to my console stores to see what was available. Grabbed Gone Home when it was free for PS Plus members in June, and then downloaded Unravel when it went on sale in the Xbox Store.

Gone Home was fun and really messed with you-  I don’t usually go for “exploration” video games, but the whole vibe was really spooky and the tension built throughout. I played through it in a weekend because I had to know how it was going to end, and when it did I was like “Ooooooh. Oh wow.” No spoilers except to say that it wasn’t really a horror game… except for how it kind of was. Ha!

Unravel is another game that really surprises you. When I first started playing the puzzle platformer, I was underwhelmed by the mechanics. It seemed like the whole game would be spent struggling to move through the world with a limited set of actions. But then as you progress through the levels, you learn more and more just how much you CAN do. The puzzles were just the right amount of hard (in my humble opinion) and every level was visually stunning and set to a beautiful soundtrack.

That Dragon, Cancer

I remember hearing about That Dragon, Cancer at E3 in 2013. It made a big impression at IndieCade despite being about a pretty somber topic: the developer’s young son was diagnosed with cancer, and at the time had been battling it for 2 years.

Well, the game was released earlier this month on Steam and is getting some pretty stellar reviews. It’s not done in a realistic, documentary-like style. Instead, it delves into the metaphysical and brings emotions to the forefront. This seems to make the story more relatable: among all the good reviews you can find online are stories from people who have experienced similar tragedy, and this game is helping them to face that loss, sometimes for the first time.

I don’t know yet if I’ll be downloading, but I will say that I really enjoyed listening to the story behind the game in this podcast from RadioLab. I recommend listening but with this caveat: it is HEARTBREAKING. I was sobbing at points, so, you know, don’t listen to it around other people. The strangers on the train or at the gym will be wondering what’s up. Seriously ;_;

Xbox One Shenanigans

I have been spending a LOT of time on my new Xbox One. On Black Friday I picked up the first Tomb Raider game for $10 and finished it over the holiday weekend, and now I’ve been playing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It was on sale for 50% off in the Xbox One store 🙂

The Tomb Raider reboot was fun. Very much like the Uncharted games, which I spent a lot of time playing and replaying. Not sure I want to replay the Tomb Raider game though… only missed 3 achievements on my first playthrough and the story wasn’t really compelling enough for another tell. Wish the puzzles would have been a little harder/more interesting, too, like they were in Uncharted. Maybe that’s what we can expect in the new Tomb Raider game? It’s on my wish list for Christmas!

The Witcher 3 is my new “go to” game for when I have a free hour or so. I love open world RPGs for whiling away some time! And I’ve been figuring out Twitch, so I can record my gameplay and then use the Twitch “Highlight” feature to create clips that I can post to YouTube. Just made a clip of the scene where you meet Keira Metz… naked. It is seriously weird how realistic her boobs are. Check it out:

Wii U… so yeah, that just happened

Just ordered a Wii U!!!!!

I don’t know what’s gotten into me lately, but after the last few years of spending next to nothing on games, I just went all out this Black Friday/Cyber Monday.

Amazon’s $250 Wii U bundle with Mario Kart 8 was just so tempting, and I really wanted the Wind Waker HD, which also just happened to be on sale on Nintendo’s website…  so yeah. Now I’ve got the PS4, a new Xbox One, and a new Wii U on the way.

My husband has been trying to get me to hook up the Wii since we moved into the new house (back in August). All our multiplayer games are on Wii, and he’s not much of a solo gamer. But I just kept putting it off because the stupid thing has to be hooked up directly to the TV with the composite cables I got to boost the resolution. And that means I’m working around my receiver and surround sound system… and the sound from the TV is shit. So either I get good sound or good picture.

Now I can get both sound and picture through the Wii U’s HDMI cable! And the new Mario games, too. w00t! Also will be checking out that Splatoon…
