That Dragon, Cancer

I remember hearing about That Dragon, Cancer at E3 in 2013. It made a big impression at IndieCade despite being about a pretty somber topic: the developer’s young son was diagnosed with cancer, and at the time had been battling it for 2 years.

Well, the game was released earlier this month on Steam and is getting some pretty stellar reviews. It’s not done in a realistic, documentary-like style. Instead, it delves into the metaphysical and brings emotions to the forefront. This seems to make the story more relatable: among all the good reviews you can find online are stories from people who have experienced similar tragedy, and this game is helping them to face that loss, sometimes for the first time.

I don’t know yet if I’ll be downloading, but I will say that I really enjoyed listening to the story behind the game in this podcast from RadioLab. I recommend listening but with this caveat: it is HEARTBREAKING. I was sobbing at points, so, you know, don’t listen to it around other people. The strangers on the train or at the gym will be wondering what’s up. Seriously ;_;
